Alberta smoke & CO detector laws

National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition; National Fire Code – 2023 Alberta Edition

Buildings covered: Buildings containing residential/care occupancy with a fuel-burning appliance or storage garage; also business/personal services and mercantile occupancies.

Where to install: Inside each bedroom, or outside within 5 m of each bedroom door. Service rooms require an alarm in the room and in adjacent suites sharing a wall/floor-ceiling assembly. Storage garages require alarms in adjacent suites.

Power / type: CSA 6.19; hardwired without disconnect switch, battery, or plug-in; mechanically fixed at manufacturer’s height. In houses with a secondary suite, alarms must be wired together so one activation sounds all.

Standard: CSA 6.19 Residential Carbon Monoxide Alarming Devices.

Maintenance: Must be kept in operating condition; disabling prohibited.

Penalties: Enforced under Alberta’s safety codes system; fines for contraventions are set out in the applicable Act and regulations.
